What is Pulpitis?

Within each tooth there is a layer that is referred to as pulp. Pulp is where the connective tissues are located along with nerves and blood vessels. When the pulp of a tooth becomes infected, it is referred to as pulpitis. One who suffers from pulpitis can expect painful inflammation in one or multiple teeth and this occurs when bacteria infects the pulp causing severe swelling. There are two types of pulpitis that occur, reversible and irreversible pulpitis. If the infection is caught early enough, the pulp can be fully restored and infection can be cured. Unfortunately, for those who leave pulpitis untreated, the infection can become more severe and the pulp is unable to be saved.

Possible Symptoms of Pulpitis:

  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Inflammation
  • Bad breath
  • Fever
  • Constant pain in gums and teeth
  • Tenderness
  • Headaches
  • Jaw pain
  • Ear pain

What are some possible causes of Pulpitis:

Enamel and dentin layers surround the pulp of a tooth protecting it from harmful bacteria. When these layers become infected, bacteria can break through to the pulp causing Pulpitis. Common ways surrounding layers can get infected:

  • Cavities
  • Tooth decay
  • Mouth injury
  • Tooth grinding
  • Gingivitis
  • Poor oral hygiene

Possible Ways to Treat Pulpitis:

  • Pulpectomy (first part of a root canal)
  • Tooth extraction
  • Pain medications
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
