What is Periodontitis?

Periodontitis is harmful oral disease that occurs when the ligaments and bones that support teeth become infected. Plaque and tartar can build up over time, and if not treated, they can lead to periodontics. Periodontitis, gingivitis and periodontal disease are the two main causes of tooth loss in adults over 30 and studies have shown that there may even be a link with heart disease. Surprisingly, periodontitis involves low levels of pain, which is why it is always a good idea to get checked if you experience any one of these symptoms:

Common Symptoms of Periodontitis:

  • Gums turn red and swell
  • Bleeding in the gums
  • Receded gums from teeth
  • Bad Breath
  • Tender Gums
  • Sensitive Teeth
  • Painful Chewing

Common Causes of Periodontitis:

  • Tooth erosion/decay
  • Chipped/broken teeth
  • Repetitive trauma to the tooth
  • Cavities Gingivitis
  • Poor oral hygiene

Common Risk Factors of Periodontitis:

  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Dry mouth
  • Not flossing at least twice a day
