What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is a mouth disease that is formed when there is a buildup of plaque on the front of the teeth, between the teeth, behind the teeth, along the gum line, or below the gum line. Without proper care, gingivitis may lead to more serious gum disease that is more difficult to treat and can have more harmful effects. The plaque, when not treated, releases toxins that will slowly eat away tooth enamel and irritate gum tissue. Chronic gingiva inflammation can also be caused from pre-existing disease's such as diabetes, repertory disease, and coronary disease.

Some studies claim that harmful bacteria can also enter your bloodstream through the gum tissue. When this is the case, your heart, lungs, and other critical parts of your body can be at risk. There are other forms of gingivitis that may be more severe. These may be more painful and can even cause ulcerations. Luckily, with modern day advancements in research and dentistry specialization available, severe cases are significantly rarer.
