What is an abscessed tooth?

An abscessed tooth is caused from an infection in the root of a tooth that consists of a pus-filled pocket. These can be extremely uncomfortable and can happen to anyone. It is similar to having a pimple, but on the sides of your teeth and your gum. Abscessed teeth, if not treated properly, can become further more infected and cause more harm to your mouth. This is why it is very important to constantly check your mouth for anything out of the ordinary. Our dentist specialists provide fast and painless treatments that will guarantee an abscess free mouth.

There are two kinds of abscessed teeth:

  1. Periapical Abscess
  2. Periodontal Abscess

A periapical abscess is more common than a periodontal abscess, and are developed with in a tooth from bacteria. When teeth are cracked or begin to decay, bacteria have a better chance of getting inside a tooth. Once bacteria can access the tooth's roots and connective tissues, the tooth can easily become infected.

A periodontal abscess is less common and is when a pus-like pocket forms in the gums, between teeth. Often old food and other types of bacteria can get stuck in-between the teeth which can cause infection. When an infection is present, an abscess can easily be formed.

Common Symptoms:

  • Pain in tooth
  • Jaw pain
  • Pimple like growth of gums/side of tooth
  • Gum swelling
  • Redness in the gums

What Are Some Possible Causes of Abscessed Teeth?

  • Gum disease

  • Loss of tooth pulp
  • Poor oral hygiene

Possible Ways to Treat Abscessed Teeth:
