There are two kinds of abscessed teeth:
A periapical abscess is more common than a periodontal abscess, and are developed with in a tooth from bacteria. When teeth are cracked or begin to decay, bacteria have a better chance of getting inside a tooth. Once bacteria can access the tooth's roots and connective tissues, the tooth can easily become infected.
A periodontal abscess is less common and is when a pus-like pocket forms in the gums, between teeth. Often old food and other types of bacteria can get stuck in-between the teeth which can cause infection. When an infection is present, an abscess can easily be formed.
